Since my problems are not the ones I have seen in other reviews, I suppose I shouldn't feel like I should have expected the problems. I intended to use it on my MacBook Pro, but I'm having the same problems when trying to use it on PC-based recording programs too. With a guitar, I get exactly what I expect: good, clear, sound at a reasonable volume.

All is well there. The problem is with microphones. With the signal dial up to max, and the clip light flashing almost solid, the level received by my recording software either Garageband on Mac or Cubase on PC is barely there.

When set so that the clip light comes on only occasionally, it is almost no signal at all. I wrote to Tascam and got a reply that it is likely that my dymnamic microphones SM57 and SM58, aren't putting out enough and to try it with the guitar switch on. Well, yes, that boosts the signal but the quality goes down the crapper.

When I responded that I wasn't happy with their response politely they never got back to me and I forgot about the issue for a while. I should have returned it immediately but kinda set it aside when I got busy. Also note that the warranty is one year on parts, but labor is not included, so unless you plan on doing any warranty repairs yourself, the warranty is worthless.

Update October Despite the low level from any microphones, I had an application where I could live with that and needed to run two condenser mic's into one channel, so I attached them to this POS and fed the output through the Line Out into another mixer. The resulting signal through the Line Out is a loud hum. Ruined an entire night's live recording.

At least now I don't feel so bad throwing this thing in the trash where it belongs. One person found this helpful. I really like this device. I'm a filmmaker and had been using a Tascam DR for recording a vocalist and guitar for their recordings. I also do music video work so audio work has become a hobby.

I now use Adobe Audition for my audio work Soundtrack Pro works too. I didn't even try the software that came with it, I'd rather use what I know will achieve the results I want. I hooked up a non-phantom powered XLR shotgun mic only mic I have. Audition does not allow you to monitor what you are recording, only VU meters. This device allows you to do so, provided you select it as your output device. I was able to hear both my voice and the previous recorded track, which is a very good thing.

The only real complaint I have is that the "Phones" levels are really low on the device. However, because I'm recording on a multi-track and have a digital mixer on screen, I'm able to amplify audio when needed. My vocalist needs to hear what the guitar is playing, and was not able to do this before.

Amplifying a certain track on screen is fine with me if there is slight distortion, it's just being referenced for the vocalist, not a big deal. When referencing audio from a track, this method appears to be the way to go.

Solely relying on this device to play audio at a good level isn't terrible, but it could definitely be improved. It's not meant for music production, rather field production where sound are much louder.

All in all this device seems to be working well. I will put it to the real test soon and believe it will achieve the results I want. I do recommend this device, but make sure you have on screen controls for headphone playback. As an audio hobbyist, I love this device. As a filmmaker who also does music video work, this seems to be the fit for me. I have used this with both PC and Mac. My PC was a Dell Inspiron 14z with 8 gigs of ram.

In fact, this unit helped alleviate the problem, but alas, not enough. Problem solved! It took a bit of finesse to get the vocals just right, but it is doable.

I'm not sure if the fact that it's USB powered has something to do with it, but it seems my other recording system, which is an older mac with a Tascam US mixer gives me a much cleaner sound with less finegaling. But just try to find US today. Even if you could, the latest Mac OS no longer supports it with a driver. Getting back to the US It comes bundled with Cubase LE which I installed and have been playing around with. I even bought a 3rd party book so I could learn my way around Cubase.
